Bonfire Night
Today it is Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night. Everyone marvel upon Halloween, the American celebration, but let's not forget Bonfire Night, an historical British festival.
What is it?
It is an annual event celebrated on November the 5th to remember Guy Fawkes' gunpowder plot in 1605.
What do they celebrate?
English people celebrate the fact that Guy Fawkes didn't succeed in blowing up the Parliament and killing King James I.
How is it commemorated?
Throughout England, people light huge bonfires where they burn Guy Fawkes's effigy. In the bonfire, people warm up their soup or cook potatoes wrapped in foil.
They let off magnificent fireworks. That night, the traditional food is Parkin cake, a sticky cake made of oatmeal, ginger, syrup and treacle. As they sit around the fire, people cook sausages and marshmallow over the flames.
Many rythmes and chants accompany the celebration. Here are some traditional ones:
Remember the burning of the Guy, the lighting of fireworks and the songs are the important moments/milestones of the night.
