William Ernest Henley is a Victorian poet (1849–1903). In 1875, he wrote the poem Invictus. Invictus means invicible/unconquered/undefeated in latin. The poem deals with courage, self mastery (contrôle de soi), taking your own destiny and responsibilty.
Invictus was Madiba's (Nelson Mandela) favourite poem. It helped him to hang on while he served his 27 years imprisonment on Robben Island.
